Ordered my MSD coils and NGK Ruthenium plugs for the new van this morning.

What is the advantage of the MSD coil packs over stock? They won’t perform any differently than stock coils. I’d go with stock unless the msd are cheaper.

1. They’re $10 more per set than the cheapest OEM coils.
2. Better coils have been proven to smooth out the power/torque curves on Pentastar engines.
3. The generally outlast OEM coils.

I’ve always had a car run better with a hotter spark. It’s easier to tune, fewer misfires, more power on the dyno. You don’t have to gap down the plug as much or at all with a decently hot ignition. This will mean a better running,cleaner engine throughout the life of the plug.

Interesting. I don’t understand how they can perform differently than other coils if the input is the same? I guess the stock coils could cause breakup over certain rpm, but I would think that rpm would be outside what the ecu would allow anyway? I wish I understood ignition systems a bit more.

The only ignition system I have really “modified” was on an older volvo. I added a bigger coil, but nothing else. I also had to run a tighter gap on my plugs because they would blow out under high boost.
I understand that upgrades need to be made if there are other engine mods, just curious what it will do for a stock vehicle. I would assume the limits are set by the ecu, not the coil itself. Like I said, I don't know jack about ignition systems!

From my understanding it’s a matter of cost vs performance.
Factory uses the cheapest coil possible that does the job reliably. This means it produces “enough” spark to do the job. That does not however mean it produces optimum spark for a full burn of fuel.
Better burn equals better performance. So better coils can net more power and help smooth out the curves.
Ripp performance has dyno videos showing 10hp/10ft-lbs on back to back runs of their coils vs stock coils, they exclusively deal with Pentastar engines, so I see no reason to doubt their claims.
